Bad Eats

Finding food dogs can eat is actually easier than finding food dogs cannot.  But there are some very dangerous foods that we need to be aware of when feeding our dogs table scraps and other food we consume.

One of the most notorious and talked about no-no's for dogs is chocolate. Let's take a look at the truth about how chocolate will impact your dog's health.

The simple answer is pretty poorly. Caffeine and theobromine are the culprits here.  Both are stimulants and can affect both your dog's nervous system and heart.  Increased frequency in urination is a tell tale sign that your dog was affected adversely by consuming chocolate.  But don’t wait for that.  If your pet eats chocolate consider going to the vet immediately.

If a pet is not treated quickly, seizures or death could occur.  Let’s not take any chances. Even a little chocolate can induce vomiting and diarrhea.

How much chocolate will affect my dog?
Good question.  The amount really does matter.  A Saint Bernard eating two bites of a brownie is not going to have a seizure.  But baking chocolate with as little as 10 oz. could kill the largest dog.  And it’s pretty easy for a large dog to eat that small amount before you can stop it from happening.

The type of chocolate is equally important.  White chocolate is far less severe than dark chocolate.  Please don’t take this as a suggestion to feed your dog white chocolate.  Just don’t feed him chocolate of any kind and avoid the hassle or something far more severe.

Take a look at the following chart showing threshold amounts based on your dog's approximate weight:

Weight (Dog) White Choc Milk Choc Semi-sweet Baking
lb oz oz oz oz
10 450 7 3.33 1
20 900 14 6.67 2
30 1350 21 10.00 3
40 1800 28 13.33 4
50 2250 35 16.67 5
60 2700 42 20.00 6
70 3150 49 23.33 7
80 3600 56 26.67 8
90 4050 63 30.00 9

So your 50 lb golden retriever can probably eat pounds of white chocolate.  But I would not want to have to clean up after him.  The fat content and general uncommon food should make him uncomfortable and irregular, to put it mildly.  But just 5 oz. of a dark chocolate can kill the same dog.  Be safe:  keep chocolate, all chocolate, of reach.
